What will students learn in Unit 1? In Cambridge Grade 4 Chapter 1, students master place value up to 10,000, rounding to nearest 10/100/1000, and comparing & ordering numbers. This is foundation for addition, subtraction and problem solving.

1. What is Place Value? (Ex 1.1)

Place value is the value of a digit based on its position. In 4-digit number TH H T O.

• Example: In 6,847 -> 6 is 6000 (Thousands), 8 is 800 (Hundreds), 4 is 40 (Tens), 7 is 7 (Ones)
• Partitioning: 6,847 = 6000 + 800 + 40 + 7
• Trick: To find 10 more/less, only change Tens digit. 100 more/less, change Hundreds digit.

2. How to Round Numbers? (Ex 1.2)

Rounding makes numbers easier to estimate.

• Nearest 10: Look at Ones. If 0-4, round down. If 5-9, round up. Eg: 2,847 -> Ones is 7 so 2,850
• Nearest 100: Look at Tens. Eg: 2,847 -> Tens is 4 so 2,800
• Nearest 1000: Look at Hundreds. Eg: 7,362 -> Hundreds is 3 so 7,000

3. Comparing and Ordering (Ex 1.3)

Use symbols > (greater than), < (less than), = (equal). Always compare from left (Thousands first).

Number Patterns: Find the rule. Example 3400, 3500, 3600... Rule is +100 each time, so next is 3700.
